This means Apple gives them a push by charging only 15% for their paid and in-app purchases.
Small iOS Developers to Get 50% Discount!
Until last month, Apple was accused by several app developers, including Telegram and Epic Games, of charging unfair price cuts. The Cupertino based company has been charging a flat 30% fees for all in-app purchases and paid apps from developers, which seems a reasonable crime. While Google does the same, it allows users to side-load apps, thus avoiding harsh accusations like Apple. This issue has gone so far that Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against Apple and even formed a coalition with other companies to do the same. And now, to appease at least some of them, Apple has announced the Small Business Program. Under this scheme, Apple intends to encourage the new and small developers by giving them a flat 50% off its Appstore charges. Eligible developers for this discount will be the ones earning under $1 million from all their apps. Thus, they’d be paying only 15% against the regular 30% charges fixed for big developers. Also, Apple clarified that the current developers whose income has fallen under $1 million in the preceding year could reapply for this discount. And those who’ve crossed the threshold will be charged at 30% as usual. Launching this, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, said, “We’re launching this program to help small business owners write the next chapter of creativity and prosperity on the App Store, and to build the kind of quality apps our customers love.”
