The report considered a positive push from 5G carriers and OEMs, who’re deploying the services rapidly around the world. With over 600 million units of 5G devices shipped globally, and aggressive adoption by people in the US and Northeast Asia, 5G is growing at a faster pace than 4G in its initial days.
5G Adoption Across The World
Though 5G had a rough start with superstitious and unreasonable beliefs from people, it’s now being adopted more aggressively by most than ever. The US-based 5G network equipment maker Ericsson stated that 5G mobile subscriptions would increase at a CAGR of 83% in Southeast Asia and Oceania through to 2027. This is a penetration rate of 46% – almost equal to that of 4G at 47%. And with over 615 million units of 5G devices shipped last year and more models introduced by OEMs regularly, Ericsson stated that 5G subscriptions would hit a billion mark by the end of 2022. Countries leading the score are in North-East Asia and North America, having a penetration rate of 19% and 28% in 2021, respectively. Over 70 million 5G subscriptions were added in Q1 of 2022, making the total count 620 million as of now. China is said to be the aggressive adopter, with 5G developments and deployments at a rapid pace. Ericsson stated that 4G subscriptions too had good growth in Q1 this year, with over 70 million, pushing the total number to 4.9 billion. And 5G, on the other hand, is expected to hit a 4.4 billion mark by the end of 2027, while the 4G count would dip to 3.5 billion at the same time. With a fast adoption rate of 4G since its launch, it attributed 5G success to wide and early 5G deployments in China, growth in device availability, and faster dipping of prices of services. Last year, more than 20 service providers launched 5G standalone networks – with twice the number expected to follow this year.
